DBC News #6
December 2013 Seasonal Greetings!
 With
Welcome to the the 6th and last issue of DBC News in 2013!

Looking back & Seasonal greetings from the board!

This year has been a busy year for the Danish Business Club in Moscow and the first of its kind with the current board of directors. Looking back a new board was chosen in the beginning of the year, the different roles were appointed and we have had a very strong commitment from all the board members and our different profiles turned out to be a great asset for our cooperation.

We started the year of 2013 with a some great challenges ahead of us. We all had big ambitions for our club and agreed that we need to ensure a good balance between business, cultural and social content in our activities. In order to find the right balance, we conducted a survey among members and got a good level of participation. Based on the outcome we have then tried to plan the coming year and was faced with the first big challenge, a missing location for the very popular midsummer party and a lack of financial funds. However, after reading the feedback from the above mentioned survey, we got together and made the planning of activities for the year and was then able to present a solid framework for potential sponsors and was immediately supported by the club's long term loyal corporate members. With a more healthy financial situation and a lot of location search, our team managed to host the first midsummer party outside embassy dacha premises and successfully so.
Both before and after we have had very interesting company visits and presentations, learning from fellow members and are planning to continue this in the new 2014.
More than 30 events was hosted throughout 2013 in close cooperation with the Royal Danish Embassy. Since the very beginning of our ambassadors appointment we have felt a serious interest and support from H.E. Thomas Winkler and his team and are very grateful for that.
The strong support from the embassy also resulted in several events hosted in the premises of either the embassy or the ambassadors residence i.e. the very successful Finance Day and Christmas dinner.

2014 is ahead of us and the macro economic outlook shows that it will be a challenging year compared to 2013. Also we will see some changes in our board of directors as Allan Mortensen, our treasurer, has accepted some new professional challenges back in Denmark from Q1 2014. I would like to use this opportunity to thank Allan for his efforts in introducing a very coherent and new policies and a system ensuring transparency and compliance with bylaws as well as accounting rules. The board wishes Allan all the best in his new endeavours.
In the early 2014 you will all receive an invitation to the general assembly where we intent to invite for new participants of the board and supporting positions.

At the upcoming general assembly we are also intending to show our general outlook for 2014, but let me already now reveal that we have big ambitions to continue improving both the activities of DBC both with regards to content, quantity and quality, as well as utilisation of other forums platforms for the members of DBC.

With these words, the board and I would like to thank our sponsors and all members for your great support, trust and commitment throughout 2013. We would like to wish you and your families the best of seasonal greetings.

- Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!

Chairman of the Board

Kasper Ditlevsen

Finance Day 2013

Finance Day 2013 Christmas Dinner at the ambassador's residence
Sponsorships
On the 22nd of November EKF, Nordea, the Royal Danish Embassy and DBC hosted its first Finance Day ever. It was an ambitious event, as DBC have never done a full day event of this kind and the content has limitations in reaching a wider audience.
It however turned out to be a very big success. Success in having a full house of participants with a sold out event. Unfortunately we had to turn down a few interested, but last minute registrations for such events are risky. Also we received feedback from more than 75% of participants at the end of the event, where the average rating of the event was just below the maximum 5 of 5. Thank you to EKF, Royal Danish Embassy and Nordea, as well as our general sponsors, speakers, panelists and participants of the day!

See pictures from the day here!
6th of December was the day for this years' Christmas Dinner, hosted at our ambassadors residence. Again we faced a very big interest from DBC members, in fact we again had a full house and had to turn down a few late registrations. This year ambassador Thomas Winkler welcomed and gave everyone seasonal greetings, Kasper Ditlevsen gave thanks to our sponsors and summarised the past year activities and challenges for the club. A big thanks have to be given to the ambassadors for again letting us into his home, allocating his great staff to help out ensuring that we all could enjoy this wonderful evening. This year chef Jan exceeded expectations and was asked to come out for a round of applause for a well prepared Christmas dinner.
Dan Cargo made this wonderful evening possible by sponsorship of the event. Thank you very much for that!
Pictures will be placed in the archive section on our website very soon.
As mentioned above, this year started out being a big challenge to sustain the traditional activities because of lack of substantial funds. Having said that, we have ever since received a great deal of support and sponsorships from our great sponsors.
We have in the board experienced a growing interest among members in supporting our activities becoming sponsors of either specific events, or general sponsors of DBC. Naturally this is vital for the club to not just sustain, but also develop into a more professional club with great levels of content in activities. For the general sponsorships, the board has decided to offer 12 consecutive months of sponsorship, for respectively gold-, silver- and bronze sponsorships. We decided to do so, in order to respect different financial calendars of member companies, as well as allow for a more even spread income.

On behalf of the club, we would like to extent a very big thank you to Delacour Law Firm, Arla, EKF, Haldor Topsøe and the Royal Danish Embassy for the support of DBC this year!

LOOKING BACK
The Embassy is on Facebook! If you haven’t already ‘liked’ the Embassy’s newly launched Facebook-page, then be sure to go to ‘Embassy of Denmark in Russia’ to keep up with news and events. In the end of October, the Embassy hosted an event with the well-known Danish brand Evita Peroni. Ambassador Thomas Winkler welcomed all the guests and partners of Evita Peroni at the Residence. The well-known Danish brand has become a leader within fashion accessories, and offers hair accessories and jewellery of the highest design and style, while still maintaining reasonable prices! We are pleased that the Danish company has found a respected Russian partner, who contributes to the development of Evita Peroni in Russia. The Embassy had the pleasure of welcoming the Prime Minister of the Government of the Faroe Islands to the Embassy in the beginning of November. Prime Minister of the Government Mr. Kaj Leo Johansen visited Moscow and Kazakhstan and while in Moscow he kindly agreed to give a presentation on the Faroe Islands for the Embassy staff. It was a captivating and interesting presentation on the beautiful islands!

COMING UP
Within the upcoming weeks, The Trade Council will launch a LinkedIn page by the name “Eksportrådet Rusland – The Trade Council, Russia and Ukraine’. So be sure to ‘follow’ the page once it has been published to keep track of interesting news, events for Danish companies and updates on doing business in Russia!

Finance Day - 22nd of November

- Now combined with Chris Weafer & Steen Grondahl

Denmark's official Credit Agency, EKF, Nordea, the Royal Danish Embassy and the Danish Business Club will host Finance Day 2013.

Danish Business Club in Moscow - New logo

After a lot of internal discussions and search for original file versions of our old logo, the board agreed to give our club logo a refreshing update. In order to produce print materials like banners, posters and other offline material, we needed a raw file format. Not being able to find such version of old logo, gave us a good opportunity to renew our logo and bring it up to date, without losing brand awareness.
Several versions were discussed, but our choice was unanimous and we are happy to introduce a refreshed logo, keeping a link to the older version, while letting the Russian flag come out clear, as opposed to the older version where it could be argued that only the blue colour came through.
Congratulations to all members with our new logo!

Red Carpet Visa service

Denmark is now offering even easier access to multi-visa for Russian business connections. This is achieved through the worldwide launch of the Red Carpet Programme. The Embassy has so far sent out invitations to a few companies who were already pre-approved for the Red Carpet Programme.
Your benefits are quite simply:
  • Up to 5 year multi-entry visa
  • Less waiting time as there will now be VIP treatment at the VFS-centers
  • A possibility for application without personally having to be present
Who can be enrolled in the Red Carpet Program?

The following are examples of entities that may be offered an accreditation upon request:
  • Well-established local subsidiaries of Danish companies
  • Well-established local companies with a subsidiary in Denmark
  • Companies that regularly sends employees to Denmark
  • A local company with an exclusive partnership with a Danish company
  • A local company whose employees need to travel frequently to Denmark for business
  • Local companies with an interest in investing in Denmark
  • Local institutions (NGO’s, travel agencies etc.) which cooperate closely with similar Danish institutions
For more information go to the website of the Danish Embassy here.

New legislation - Drivers license
- New legislation about foreigners who drive in Russia is expected to be introduced November 5, 2013.

If you are a foreigner and drive any form of vehicle in Russia please note that new rules are about to be implemented: Non-Russian citizens - including professional drivers in international traffic (e.g. professional drivers employed in DK) who drive in Russia need to have a their national driving licences officially translated into Russian and duly certified (Apostille).
  • An international driver’s license is to be presented along with the national driver’s license (with the before mentioned translation/certification).
  • For working in Russia as a driver, a Non-Russian citizen need to have a Russian driving license.
Currently the Russian authorities are considering the procedure for the exchange of foreign national and international driving licenses to Russian driving licenses. It is planned that the driving licenses' exchange would be performed upon passing the theoretical exam.

Activities and news from our embassy

IWC Winter Bazaar.
Preparations have begun for the International Women’s Club (IWC) Winter Bazaar where there will be a Danish booth. Last year, the bazaar, which takes place at Radisson Slavyanka, had more than 4.000 visitors and managed to raise proceeds of over 6 million rubles to 20 different charities! The prep-group is now working on gathering sponsors and donations for the Danish booth.

Facebook is now an integrated part of the Embassy’s daily lingo!

Within the coming weeks the Embassy will launch a Facebook page, so make sure to ‘like’ the page once it has been launched to keep track of interesting news, events and regular updates.

Days of Europe.
Ambassador Thomas Winkler went with a number of EU Ambassadors to participate in the Days of Europe, held in Kaluga during the first weekend of October. The Ambassador will participate in debates about the future of Russian and European relations, visit educational institutions and promote Danish language and culture.

International fashion trade show.
Back in the beginning of September, the Embassy participated in the 21st CPM Moscow - an international fashion trade show, which in four days attracted more than 19,000 visitors. The Embassy represented Danish design in general along with three Danish jewellery and fashion jewellery brands; Trollbeads, Louise Kragh and Stars by P. It was a huge success and the Embassy is already looking forward to the next CPM Moscow fair in February 2014.

Healthcare delegation.
A delegation of Russian regional ministers from the Kaluga region, including the Deputy Regional Governor for healthcare, were in Denmark in mid-September to meet with decision makers and representatives from the Danish healthcare sector. The delegation met with companies such as Novo Nordisk, Falck, Pressalit, Guldmann and SYDTEK, and engaged in fruitful discussions on various topics such as innovation and healthcare financing.

Association of European Businesses

The DBC board wanted to re-obtain a closer interaction with The Association of European Businesses in Russia, hereafter AEB. The DBC board had a good and informative meeting with Aage Nielsen. Aage Nielsen has been the Danish representative in AEB for decades. In some periods in very close corporations with DBC, which the DBC board wanted to re-obtain.
It was agreed that we will meet on a regular basis. In order to brief you, we will from now on place relevant AEB events in our event calendar. In 2014 AEB will give a presentation about their work. AEB represents many industries and thus Aage Nielsen and the DBC board will be selective in what is being communicated. Financial Update
We are happy to say that DBC is today financially well! The Sct. Hans summer party was this years biggest post on the budget, and even though all the expenses already have been paid, then DBC is now in a better financial situation than in the beginning of the year. This is because DBC have recieved support from the sponsors: Delacour law firm, Lego, Arla, Haldor Topsøe, Uhrenholdt and Danish Crown - A big THANK YOU to them! :) Having a good financial base is important for DBC! Good finance gives the board the possibility to plan ambitious new business and social events, and give the board freedom to execute the events as to how and when it is best for the DBC members. The good financial status supports the ambitious program that DBC has for the rest of 2013 and 2014. Please follow the event calender.

From 2010-2012 she was attaché in Kiev, so this part of the world is not unfamiliar to her.

Welcome to the third issue of DBC News. We are proud to present a newsletter full of relevance and progress of all our initiatives. We have successfully hosted the first of many business events and are also proud to say that we have secured Sankt Hans event in spite of funding challenges. A couple of new members have joined our club and a good pipeline of promising events are shaping up. Enjoy the reading!
If you haven't already seen it, then you still have a chance to visit the leading Danish newspaper Børsen's website where you can find great articles about some of our members' challenges and advises in doing business in Russia. Some articles are partly available without subscription and some not. You can follow this link In the below section you can read about Sankt Hans in detail (Mid-summer party), but it is important to emphasize that the cost of this event will be significantly higher than previous years, which means that it would be highly appreciated if member companies would volunteer as a sponsor of the event. Products in kind is appreciated, but more importantly we need funding.   IMPORTANT:
Although that our By-Laws states that the auditor of DBC is appointed at the General Assembly, we are in the need of a new already now. Our current auditor was re-elected from previous year, but have since that taken on new challenges in a new company and has limited time to meet our needs.
The idea is to use this auditor more actively for legal compliance as well as auditing our books. We will therefore instigate the search for a new auditor and let you know more hereof, when a suggestion is ready.

Sankt Hans 2013 – The DBC Midsummer Party
As you know, the search for a new venue for Sct. Hans has been intensive. We have been in all corners of the city, and finally we think we have found the right spot. “Apple garden” within the leisure park Lata Treck. http://www.spusk.ru/ Apple garden is a fenced territory, so we will have all the privacy we need. It is in walking distance from the metro, in a very nice area of Moscow. There will be plenty of room for all our odd Danish traditions such as witch burning, bonfire and songs. More information will follow in separate invitation at your earliest convenience.
But please reserve now the 22nd of June in your calendar if you have not already done it!

Lego and Mogens Laursen's Russian experience
LEGO and Mogens Laursen’s Russian experience On May 21st a score of DBC’s members spent an inspiring evening with LEGO’s Russian boss who frankly spoke about and discussed LEGO’s challenges on the Russian market and how his organization meets them. Though based on a professional PowerPoint presentation, the meeting can be characterized as more like an informal dialogue and discussion rather than one-way communication. This, in combination with Mogens’ motivating and dynamic style, made the evening extremely profitable and the participants went home with important lessons learned. Many thanks to Mogens and LEGO for the great support of DBC through this business event!

Membership Survey
Some more food for thought from the Membership Survey.
Further to the article in DBC News no. 2, you will be able to read Some thoughts instigated by the membership survey – a document which, it is to be hoped, will be the starting point of discussions among DBC’s members. You will find the document at the below mentioned Members Only Section. The thoughts described in the document deals with important questions regarding the priorities of DBC, its events and activities. Business events have been defined as the ones of paramount importance to the members – of course, many would say, but there are slight differences of meaning regarding social aspects, as expressed by some members. Family events such as Midsummer Party and Christmas party are in general considered as important though with a considerable lower importance than business events. For many, however, the two family events seem institutionalized. Life Conditions for Danes in Moscow – what are the felt needs for DBC’s role in these aspects? Social events and networking such as Stambord and cultural events are being discussed. There is some ambivalence among members in their view on Stambord’s importance to them. Read about the thoughts in the document. Work groups for selected members and the felt needs for them, again, are met by ambivalence of many members mainly because they doubt that Danes can deal with these heavy tasks. Do we suffer from a feeling of inferiority? The ideas of an advisory board and a website discussion forum aren't met with any interest by the members. On the contrary they may be considered as dead. The idea of increasing DBC’s fees is supported by a majority of members. But there are reservations due to the needs for quality improvement of the business aspects of events. Also, the sponsorship budget should be considered together with the plans for increased fees. As Danes, we take pride in our habit of open and frank discussions of any topic. Therefore, visit DBC’s homepage and express your opinion about the questions touched upon above. See the created thread in discussion forum called Closer Interaction with Members in the Members Only section.

And he has worked with media in more than 40 countries around the world - from Denmark, Sweden and Norway to Cuba, Laos and North Korea. And he has seen media work in the world’s most developed democracies like his own country, Denmark. And most recently he has, as a lecturer at Moscow’s Independent University MGIMO, followed and analysed the current media situation and development in Russia. The topic will be Russian media seen from abroad. But Leif Lønsmann is open to discuss other topics from his widespread experience.

Event calendar:

Please do not forget to have a look at the event calendar on our website. The film festival Danish Waves is about to start and you have the possibility to see 5 of the best new Danish films in the original language with Russian subtitles. If you like musicals come to the Polish and English Embassy; here you can hear some of the most popular songs performed by the Mellow Divas. Three members of DBC are in the choir, and that is the reason why this event qualified to come on our list. If you know of anything going on in Moscow send an e-mail to helena@bollesen.dk

The only requirement is that it somehow has to have a Danish twist to it. More info can be found by clicking on the specific event listings in our Event Calendar on the website.

Sponsorships needed!
DBC has enough funds to start with a general activity level, but the direction needs to be clarified and additional funds are required. Mid-summer event requires additional funds for venue as the Embassy’s Dacha is no longer available Intentions of creating quality events requires additional funding. Furthermore we have ambitions of arranging events with key note speakers, that we most likely not will be able to convince to prepare speaking for a couple of bottles of wines. Based on the survey results and general levels of activities we will be contacting selected corporate members for a discussion of sponsorships. If you would be interested in such, please contact Kristian.lyhne@mail.tele.dk

Interested in becoming a DBC member?

Then all you have to do is to send a few words about yourself or your company, and the reason why you want to join DBC. We have two types of membership: Individual and Company memberships. Please state which type you are interested in. This info should be send to the DBC secretary. We will then respond to you with more information concerning terms and conditions for membership. We look forward hearing from you.

Message from the Board Members opinion in the recent survey Sponsorships needed! Help needed
Dear members of the Danish Business Club in Moscow,

Since our last edition of DBC News we have been very busy and are delighted to be able to share some of the efforts with you in this edition. The past couple of months have unfortunately also included a disappointment with not being able to conduct our event with Chris Weafer. However it was clearly explained to us that Chris was unable in participating. We have since that been working on building a pipeline of alternative events with business content and are happy to say that it is starting to take shape. Enjoy the reading.
Preliminary findings:

One of the most important tasks for the board is to define the future direction of DBC’s activities with the objective of better meeting the needs and expectations of its members. Important inputs in this respect are the results of the survey carried out since 26 March. We wish to thank those of our members who have taken the time to fill in the questionnaire and are grateful to receive response from 45 members. – a much higher number than what could be expected.
Fundraising:

 Membership payments:

If you for some reason still have made your payment to the annual fee or forgot to bring money to event, please contact Ljuba to ensure the payment is done as soon as possible.

Interesting results from DBC’s membership survey
Now the response has to be analysed and conclusions must be made for use in DBC’s events’ and other planning. There are, however, some results we would like to share with you at this early stage. The respondents have expressed the following scores of the events and topics in the questionnaire (scores are shown as numbers on a scale from 1 to 6, where 1 means low and 6 means high importance):

1. Events about business, financial and economic development, average score 4,7
2. Family entertainment events such as Midsummer and Christmas parties, average score 4,2
3. Other events relevant to the life conditions of Danes in Moscow, average score 4,1
4. Social, networking and cultural events such as Stambord, cultural events etc., average score 4,0
5. Industry relevant work groups selected among members, average score 3,9
6. Advisory board selected among members, average score 3,3
7. Website discussion forum for members, average score 2,9

Increase of fee for company membership, from 6.000 to 12.000 RUB p.a., answer ‘yes’ 50%
Increase of fee for individual membership, from 2.000 to 4.000 RUB p.a., answer ‘yes’ 60%
Event fees for members (with speakers of substantial standing) average in RUB 966
Event fees for members’ guests, average in RUB 1.342

Needless to say that we will not increase the fees mentioned neither tomorrow nor next month. The figures are merely an indication of members’ tolerance and it must be added here that we have received supplementary comments that acceptance of the higher fees is based on expectations of quality improvement of DBC’s events and activities.

In the near future the full results of the survey will be placed on the website!

A helping hand – New venue for DBC Midsummer Party
The temperatures are increasing and the days are getting longer, and due to this we are getting closer to the big and popular DBC Midsummer Party! The latest years we have had the pleasure to borrow the fantastic Dacha of our Danish Embassy. Unfortunately this venue will not be a possibility for this year Midsummer Party. At the moment we are checking several venues and trying to find something, which will match the stunning surroundings we are used to have at the Dacha. If anyone of you, dear members, have any good ideas or suggestions, we would appreciate to hear your thoughts. Please be so kind, to send your suggestions to; helena@bollesen.dk‎.

Event calendar

One of the aims of the new board is to keep an updated calendar of things at interest going on in Moscow. Of course somehow with Danish angle. At the moment we will like to draw your attention to the Rotary Charity dinner, organized by DBC member Erik Stenfeldt. In order not to spam, we will only send direct e-mail invitations regarding DBC events. But if you have anything you think will interest the Danish community, please send us the information and we will put it into the calendar. Remember the Danish angle, otherwise the calendar will be long, Moscow is a busy town. If it is convenient time wise we will put a link here in the newsletter. So remember to keep an eye on the calendar “insert link”, as soon as anything shows up we will naturally publish it. To find details of the Rotary Charity dinner and see all events, please follow this link

Stambord
Thursday 4th of April, we had the first Stambord. It was a great success and we are extremely happy, that so many members showed up. The atmosphere was very good and this makes us look forward to the next Stambord.

It will be on 2nd of May at the same venue, Restaurant Scandinavia. For the coming Stambord we will celebrate the beginning of the summer, and the start of May-holidays. Restaurant Scandinavia will be presenting some small complimentary dishes, which we can enjoy with the “Two for one-bar”. We are looking forward seeing you all to a lot of networking in a relaxed atmosphere on 2nd of May 19.00 hrs. .

Upcoming Events:

We are happy to announce that in the near future we have some very interesting events coming up.

We are currently in discussions with leading newspapers from Denmark and are soon able to invite you to one or two events with insights and observations from the press. Also we are about to settle the date for a joint company visit to a globally leading company in their industry, explaining how they unlocked the success to the Russian market. More info to follow!

These events are being worked on at the moment, needs confirmation and separate invitations will be sent out accordingly with further information on the details.

DBC’s new Board a message from the new Board Jazz with DBC! Closer interaction with members
Dear members of the Danish Business Club in Moscow,
At the General Assembly on January 31st 2013, the election of five new board members was taking place.

Following the General Assembly the initial and constituent board meeting was held on February 4th 2013 with full participation of all newly elected board members.

Read more in the below section "New Board"
We would like to thank all members for your trust in letting us lead DBC and facilitate events and activities that support the objectives of the business club.

The first board meeting was conducted and new roles and responsibilities have been agreed.

This can be found in the below section "New Board".
There is a Danish Jazz Concert on the 28th of February. This will replace this month’s Stambord event. A separate invitation will follow with further details.

The monthly Stambord is for all members as well as for newcomers and for members to invite guests that might be of interest to other members.
Read more about events in "Upcoming Events".
At the constituent board meeting it was a commonly shared opinion, that we should ask members of DBC about what is expected from the business club. What you:
  • Are missing?
  • Would like to see more of?
  • Would like to see less of?

State of DBC
Finances

The balance sheet presented at the general assembly together with the revenue recieved in January 2013 are sufficient to get DBC started with its first activities in 2013. That being said then there is no doubt that DBC needs further funding for the ambitious activities and events in the pipeline for 2013. We therefore urge members to pay there due membership fee (if not done already) and to help by sponsoring or fundraising for the future events and activities. In 2012, DBC had challenges in getting the Danish bank account established. This has now been solved. This means that easy ways of paying membership fees have now been established. It also gives a clear opportunity to make donations, we would like to add! The bank details and payment instructions can be retrieved by contacting the secretary.

Closer Interaction with members
We think that there ought to be much more active involvement of the members regarding contents and funding of the club’s activities. Also, we expect that the majority of members will endorse the idea of making around half of the events more business oriented, whereas the other half contribute with social, cultural & networking events.

It is with this in mind that the board decided to establish a Membership Relations function, aiming at getting a clear understanding of what the members feel they should get from DBC. The first step will be to collect viewpoints from members about your felt needs.

It will be in the form of a questionnaire supplemented with interviews with selected members. Some of you can expect to be contacted soon and we are encouraging you to voice your opinion. Finally, we are of the opinion that closer relations with the members can be achieved through a selected small group of members who are able and willing to act as an advisory board for the club and whose task is broadly to ensure that the club’s activities respond to members’ felt needs. More to follow!

Stambord
The board has decided that in the future, the monthly Stambord will be organized by DBC’s board members and invitations will be sent out around a week prior to the event. Drinks will be on members’ and guests’ own expense, unless the venue is contributing to the evening. Of course, we will try to organize such contribution.

Upcoming Events:

We are happy to announce that in the near future we have some very interesting events coming up.

On the 14th of March, there is an official delegation from Tartarstan and the official Tartarstan days will start. DBC will have access to a limited number of tickets.

Chris Weafer, Sberbank’s  well-known Chief Strategist, will be giving his view on the global economy's impact on Russia today and in the future. He will also be presenting essential findings of a survey of the Russian middle-class, its shopping behavior and its perceptions and plans of the future economic development – the so-called Ivanov Consumer Confidence Tracker. We are sure that Chris, as always, will have some extra, interesting insights up his sleeve. More info to follow!

These events are being worked on at the moment, needs confirmation and separate invitations will be sent out accordingly with further information on the details.
